Short-term, safe, loving homes for pets during times of crisis.
Placement in a trusted foster home for a short, defined period
Food, crates, litter, and basic supplies
Daily care, play, and socialization
Medication management (when needed)
Regular updates between foster families and SPA
Coordination with partners (shelters, outreach teams, hospitals)
Individuals and families temporarily unable to care for their pet due to:
Housing loss or eviction
Entry into emergency shelter
Inpatient treatment
Hospitalization
Domestic/family violence situations
Sudden life disruptions
Emergency assistance to prevent families from surrendering their pets.
SPA partners with shelters, social workers, crisis centers, and outreach teams to support people entering safe housing or medical care.
Our Goal: Reduce the trauma of separation and give families the time and safety they need to stabilize.
Emergency foster placement (same-day or next-day when available)
Short-term boarding solutions through partner organizations
Assistance with pet supplies
Collaboration with case managers, hospitals, and advocates
Safety planning for survivors with pets
Linking families to additional community resources
Helping families and pets reconnect once they're safe and stable.
SPA works closely with families throughout their crisis so reunification is possible as soon as their situation improves.
Coordinating return of pets once housing or safety is secured
Providing transportation when needed
Offering supplies (food, litter, leashes) to help families restart
Supporting the transition back home, especially for pets with special needs
Keeping pets safe until reunification is appropriate

Collaborating with CoC partners and grassroots organizations
This helps ensure that families know they have options before surrendering a pet.

SPA's programs are designed for individuals and families who:
Are residents of Macomb County (or nearby areas)
Are experiencing housing instability, crisis, or emergency circumstances
Need temporary, time-limited pet care
Can provide basic information about the pet's health and behavior
Are working toward safe and stable reunification
*SPA does not provide permanent surrender services.
To remain transparent:
Foster availability varies
Some animals with severe aggression or specialized medical needs may require case-by-case evaluation
Length of stay is typically 30-90 days, depending on crisis and foster capacity
SPA cannot guarantee immediate placement but will make every effort
This ensures expectations are clear and families feel respected.
